

A house on this site is recorded in the Domesday Book and only two families have owned the property since then.
The same family lived there from the Norman Conquest until Tudor times, when the present house was built, but lost the Estate through their involvement in a plot against Queen Elizabeth I in 1589.
The Queen gave it to one of her closest advisors, Sir Francis Walsingham, from whom the present owner, Sir William Benyon, is indirectly descended.
The house is not open to the public but the seven
acre gardens are open at the following times:
Every Monday throughout the year.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1st April to 31st October inclusive.
10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
Entrance fee £3.00 per adult. Children free.
